Jamieson, T.S., Stratton, G.W., Gordon, R. and Madani, A. 2003. The use of aeration to enhance ammonia nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands. Canadian Biosystems Engineering/Le génie des biosystèmes au Canada 45: 1.9-1.14. Nitrogen (N) resulting from manure run-off can impair receiving water bodies. Constructed wetlands are engineered systems built to utilize the treatment processes available in natural wetlands in a controlled and predictable manner. Nitrification is often limited in constructed wetlands treating agricultural wastewater due to the predominantly anaerobic conditions within the wetland. A greenhouse wetland model was constructed to assess the effects of aeration on ammonia-N removal. The system achieved a mean 50% ammonia-N removal efficiency prior to the introduction of an aquatic aeration system. After the commencement of continual aeration in the first cell of the system, ammonia-N removal efficiencies increased to a mean of 93%, parallelled by nitrate-N increases. This indicated that the addition of continual aeration has great potential to enhance nitrification in constructed wetlands receiving agricultural wastewater.

Analyzing the Removal Effect of Nitrogen before and after Enhanced Aeration in Constructed Wetlands
In this research, constructed wetlands were applied to remove the nitrogen of lightly polluted wastewater from a wastewater treatment plant in Tangshan. The results showed that a favorable removal effect of nitrogen could be obtained through constructed wetland. Moreover, the aeration device added to the bottom could increase the removal rates of ammonia nitrogen in lightly polluted wastewater,...
متن کاملTreatment of Alkaline Stripped Effluent in Aerated Constructed Wetlands: Feasibility Evaluation and Performance Enhancement
Ammonium stripping has gained increasing interest for nitrogen recovery in anaerobically digested effluents. However, the stripped effluents often still do not meet discharge standards, having high pH and residual pollutants. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are an easy to operate ecosystem and have a long history of application in treatment of wastewaters with extreme pH, such as acid mine drainage....
متن کاملNitrogen removal from wastewater by an aerated subsurface-flow constructed wetland in cold climates.
The objective of this study was to assess the role of cyclic aeration, vegetation, and temperature on nitrogen removal by subsurface-flow engineered wetlands. Aeration was shown to enhance total nitrogen and ammonia removal and to enhance removal of carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, and phosphorus. Effluent ammonia and total nitrogen concentrations were significant...
متن کاملNutrient removal efficiency by floating macrophytes; Lemna minor and Azolla pinnata in a constructed wetland
The use of constructed wetlands for purifying pre-treated wastewater is a cost effective technology that has been found to be more appropriate for many developing countries. The technology is also environmentally friendly with the wetlands being habitats for many water birds and other aquatic organisms. This study assessed nutrient removal efficiency of two floating macrophytes (Lemna minor...
متن کاملAnammox enrichment and constructed wetland inoculation for improvement of wastewater treatment performance
This study contributes to the improvement of low-cost biotechnology for wastewater treatment in constructed wetlands (CWs). Constructed wetlands are energy efficient engineered systems that mimic the treatment processes of natural wetlands, removing polluting organic matter, nutrients, and pathogens from water. The aim of this study was to investigate the advisability of the inoculation of hori...
